A Camden County has been charged in the weekend beating and robbery of an elderly Wal-Mart employee in the store’s public rest-room.

Charles Everett Williams, 19, of 184 Texas Road, Shiloh, assaulted and robbed 76-year-old George Cole Saturday night, Elizabeth City police said Monday.

Williams is charged with common law robbery, assault inflicting serious injury, possession of stolen goods and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Police said the incident happened in the Wal-Mart rest-room about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cole, of Elizabeth City, suffered cuts and bruises to his head and facial area, police said. He was treated and released from Albemarle Hospital.

Police later arrested Williams in the store parking lot. Police said they recovered a small amount of money from the suspect, but declined to say how much because of the ongoing probe.

Store manager Chris Evans said Cole is doing OK following the incident.

“We have taken care of the situation and the associate is fine,” she said, referring other questions to Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters.

Dan Fogelman, a spokesman for Wal-Mart, said he couldn’t discuss details of the incident because of the continuing police investigation.

“I won’t be able to share a lot of details other than to say that we are continuing to check on our associate as he recovers,” he said. “We appreciate the quick response from our team of associates who reacted to the situation.”

Police said there have been no reports of any other assaults or robberies at the store, located in the Tanglewood Shopping Centre off Halstead Boulevard Extended.

Police said calls for service at the store usually are in response to reports of traffic accidents, larcenies or shoplifting.

Williams is being detained at Albemarle District Jail in lieu of a $75,000 secured bond.
