Letter: Christianity hurt by its arrogance

Friday, May 02, 2008

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy and the pope's recent visit to America have prompted the following thoughts about the Christian religion.

The teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Sermon on the Mount, are sublime and very beautiful. Much of Christian music and art is also sublime and beautiful. However, Christianity has committed the following terrible sins for 2,000 years that have severely compromised its spiritual validity.

Christianity has presented its teachings as objective reality. It believes (falsely) that Christian/Biblical reality is reality itself, the only reality. Christianity has presented its way of life and its beliefs as the only true way of life for all humanity. Cultures, peoples, and nations who don't submit to the Christian view of reality (e.g Islam) are denounced as false and even evil. The Christian version of God is presented as the way God really is. Other versions of God — Allah, Buddha, Krishna, etc., are judged inferior and even evil.

In short, the essential teachings of Christianity as the religion of non-partisan, non-judgmental, and unconditional love have been replaced by judgment, condemnation, hypocrisy, and worldly power-mongering.

As C.S. Lewis once said "Jesus is either Liar, Lunatic, or Lord. Which category do you put Him in?

Mr. Gill,
Well thought out, thank you for your views. Seems JD can't see past the end of his/her nose, "the difference is, Christianityis the way", you mean the only way, right? Arrogant, judgemental and exclusive. I want no part of your (exclusive) religion. Tarheel, get a life, and a brain.

All of the worlds major religions teach that thay are the way to heaven. The difference is, Christianity is the way to heaven. Jesus said, " no one gets to the father, except through the son ". Maybe you should read up on your doctrine before you tell others what Christianity requires...........
