Dismal? Not hardly. Uncover the history and mystery of the Great Dismal Swamp for yourself.
After 15 years of planning and lobbying efforts, the Dismal Swamp State Park became a reality on March 21. For the first time, the swamp is accessible to residents of North Carolina and others. The park's wonderful staff has waited patiently for this new facility. We are definitely proud of this being the 32nd North Carolina State Park.
Located in Camden County, residents definitely need to take advantage of the wonderful resources available at the new park as well as the Dismal Swamp Trails and Welcome Center. Residents can take their kids and grandkids to see the distinctive interactive exhibits and learn about the unique ecosystem that supports the flora, fauna and residents of the Great Dismal Swamp. They also can enjoy a walk along the 300-foot boardwalk, hike or bike on 16 miles of gravel trails from the new Visitors/Environmental Center. Treating oneself to a walk over the barge bridge accessing this new facility and observing the exhibit gallery beholds unknown surprises.
An educational adventure awaits both teachers and their students right in their own backyard. Civic groups will also want to take advantage of these educational opportunities.
