Recently, I had the privilege of working with Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County officials, law enforcement officers, the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce, tourism officials and residents on a project to organize a summer bocce ball competition at Waterfront Park. The event, scheduled for July, will raise funds for the Special Olympics.
To be frank, I was not sure how difficult this task would be. The result, however, was an experience that has been overwhelmingly encouraging.
Our community is very fortunate to have Mayor Steve Atkinson. He is so optimistic about our future. His enthusiasm for this region, for Elizabeth City, its assets, waterfront and heritage is contagious.
City Manager Rich Olson, city Parks and Recreation Director Jim Overman, Museum of the Albemarle Administrator Ed Merrell and his staff, Debbie Malenfant, Andy Montero, Blackwater, the local media, Sheriff Randy Cartwright and police Chief Charles Crudup have all bent over backward to accommodate our plans. The response from businesses, community watch groups, members of City Council, and local governments to sponsor teams and volunteers has been incredibly generous.
I wish every resident could know how willingly and competently all of these people have stepped up to assist this cause by offering their time, talents and ideas. Many people have embraced our interest in helping law enforcement assist those with special needs who face life obstacles that most of us never will. It makes me very proud to be part of such a compassionate community.
