Board bites hand that feeds us

In my 25 years of living and participating in this community I have seen the U.S. Coast Guard called upon to do so many things.

Need some muscle to erect large tents for a big local event? Call the Coast Guard. Need a helicopter display or someone to host a school field trip? Call the Coast Guard. Need some participants for senior projects, shadowing programs, Relay for Life, Walk for Hunger, the Potato Festival, the Fourth of July, and River Spree events? Call the Coast Guard.

And now when they’ve asked to participate in the education of local children the Board of Education turns them down. If it were up to me whether the Coast Guard ever participated in another local program, I’d tell you “call someone who cares.”
