Although federal law — backed by recent Supreme Court rulings — prevents it, many gun-owning Americans believe that public safety proposals, such as mandatory background checks, gun registration, banning the sale of assault-type weapons and limiting the number of bullets in a clip, will eventually lead to their rights under the 2nd Amendment being overturned, and the loss of gun-ownership. Would these public safety measures be more acceptable to gun advocates if they were assured that their 2nd Amendment rights to own guns would not be affected?
WDYT? Gun control

not a problem
I have no problem with people owning guns. You want a gun, well go get one. What I do have a problem with are weapons that have no practical application outside of the military. You want an assault weapon with a 30 round clip, fine, enlist, get issued one and stand the post. As for the bleeding hearts that deplore having to run a background check, suck a lemon. it is the same as voter id, what is wrong with proving who you say you are. Will crooks and others get weapons illegally? yes! why, because you dumb ass, no loads allow it. Yes allow it. if assault weapons were not available then they would not be able to get them either. So get off your high horse and get a life.
I don't believe these safety measures...
will ever be embraced until they begin a logical attack on those who are in possession of a firearm without the legal right to own one. Right now every change they are looking to make affects the legal gun owners. Look at Chicago - supposedly one of the tightest towns across the country for gun laws....and yet they have killings almost every day. Go after the black market sales, go after those that supply these criminals with guns, go after those that commit violent acts with a gun (illegally owned or not) and then maybe I'll back the changes that the government is looking to make.
Oh...and the president can set the first example by giving up the heavily armed secret service agents that guard him 24/7.
over 500 killings by guns
over 500 killings by guns (over 95 percent handguns) in Chicago last year. 492 children shot in Chicago last year. Most of these shootings/killings were illegal handguns. Who is going to ensure these shooters register their guns?
I guess what these people want is law-abiding citizens to register their guns and we won't worry about the criminals. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
"an assault-type weapon" what is that? I've heard the term many times, but I think it needs a specific definition so everyone is talking about the same thing. A hammer in the hand of a deranged individual can become an "assault-type weapon".
I've heard it too...
I heard a woman refer to a 9mm as an assault weapon and was witness to hear another imply that a bolt action rifle was a weapon of mass destruction. Some people simply hate guns while others are just misinformed, which it's easy to be if you get your information through the media. They talk about assault weapons while showing pictures of handguns and rifles that aren't automatic or even semi-automatic.
The government proposed this knee-jerk reaction plan that has somehow lulled some of the population into thinking that it will solve problems, but it won't - not really. People really need to stop focusing on "guns = bad" and start looking at ways to keep bad people from using guns for very bad deeds.
