Recent gun shots, shooting deaths and other incidents around Elizabeth City have raised new concerns and fears about local crime. Is this the beginning of a new crime wave or something else? What should local police, public officials and residents do about it?

I say first let the police do their job, then if they don't seem to be doing it then the public has the right and obligation to get involved. If these gun shots are heard in an area or neighborhood, then perhaps a much higher police presences needs to be demonstrated there. If it costs a little more to protect the citizens then that's the way it is. I can't think of many people dumb enough to break the law by shooting up a neighborhood with a patrol car coming around the block every few minutes. Criminals are cowards and only act when they cannot be seen or when they have the upper hand. Increase the police presence and the guns will quiet down.
It's a sad cycle that no one is willing to break...
The gang issue has been on-going and is getting worse as time goes on. Law enforcement can only do so much, they investigate and arrest but then our flower sniffing DA pleads the cases down and allows these dangerous criminals to return to the streets with little more than a smack on the hand. This problem will not go away and it will not get better until private citizens, law enforcement and the judicial system decide that enough is enough.
I attended a gang workshop in the area some years back. It was supposed to be about how to identify gang activity and ways to discourage it. Instead the workshop seemed geared towards how to peacefully co-exist with gang activity in your neighborhoods. Wake up elected leaders! Pull your heads out of the sand. There is NO peaceful way to co-exist. Look at Los Angeles, Look at Chicago, Look at Detroit.... heck closer to home, look at Newport News. You think it can't happen here because we are such a small town? Think again. It's happening right now, in our schools and on our streets. It won't change until we get leaders in power with a backbone who will stand with the citizens and let their voices be heard that they will no longer tolerate this.
This has been going on for years.
Drugs and gangs out of control and elected leadership doing nothing to make it better, while residents allow their elected leaders to get by with doing nothing. This is disaster right here in River City. Unless our leaders make a firm commitment to get this under control, we ought to just roll up the sidewalks and give our beautiful city over to the gang/drug lords.
Don't see it changing...
This area is so economically depressed - and offers few opportunities for those who want to rise above their current economic condition. The real deficit is in our families... Too many are broken and fatherless (baby daddies vs. fathers) due to a depleted moral base - all feeding an entitlement culture/mentality that’s dependent on the rest of us (i.e. Government)... We have a criminal element that’s generations old – multiple generations incarcerated. The cycle continues... a cycle that breeds gangs and all types of criminal activity... We have elected officials that understand dependency is what keeps them in power… no incentive for change…
As Mike Huckabee said, we shouldn’t be surprised when our culture reflects what it’s actually become. We’ve arrogantly escorted God right out of the public square these past 50 years – with this misconception that we’ve “evolved” beyond needing Him. Then people ask "where is God?" when tragedy strikes. Look at how the failed experiment of secularism/liberalism is working America... the effects are irrefutable... “As we're sung to sleep by philosophies - That save the trees and kill the children” "While You Were Sleeping" by Casting Crowns…
