I feel that there is a great need for a competition-size swimming pool in Currituck County. I was very disappointed when I first saw the size of the swimming pool at the newly built Currituck County YMCA early last year. I have since joined the Currituck YMCA swim team, and I thoroughly enjoy it. The only negative is, with the growing size of the swim team, the small size of the swimming pool is becoming an issue.
Our YMCA is currently trying to arrange for our team to travel to Elizabeth City to practice swimming in a competition-size pool and jumping off the diving block. I also know multiple people who waste time and gas traveling to the Hickory and Elizabeth City YMCA facilities to participate on their swim teams. My sister was on the Currituck County High School swim team this year. I found it ridiculous for the swim team to still have to travel to Elizabeth City and Corolla to practice, when we just got a YMCA of our own. My sister will not participate on the swim team next year because of the excessive travel time.
I have even heard that money is not the issue when it comes to the construction of a competition-size swimming pool. The problem is that the county doesn’t think that there is enough interest to support the costs of maintaining the larger pool.
I hope that this letter is seen by the county commissioners to show them that our community would support and does need a larger pool of its own. Besides, can’t we all agree that it would be nice to save gas, while enjoying a nice big pool close to home?
