Gov’t shutdown affects region’s most vulnerable
The recent furlough of 340 federal employees at the U.S. Coast Guard base is just one of the immediate impacts of the government shutdown affecting our region. Many, especially our most vulnerable neighbors, are being affected by not just the shutdown, but also a number of cuts to essential parts of many programs. Programs that aid the jobless, working poor, elderly and families with young children by helping them meet their food needs have seen cuts at all levels.
