The people packing the ECSU auditorium to view “When Push Comes to Shove” were uniformly entranced by the exceptional music, song, dance and drama. They were so delighted it would have been easy to miss the social-value impact of the play.
Many pundits have berated the media for betraying our youth. My training in psychodrama tells me the Suttons’ presentation, “When Push Comes to Shove,” is sociologically and morally constructive and valuable at a profound but subtle level. The play gave an image of common human conditions and human dilemmas found throughout time and place, admirably presented so as to convey morally and ethically constructive solutions. The issues transcended race and social class. Done in such a joyous manner, and with the unequivocal approval of the audience, it had the effect of identifying and supporting the honorable behavior in the context of recognizable family life.
I endorse the Suttons’ play not only as great theater but as an ethical message as well.
