How refreshing to read the letter on March 2 from a writer who mentioned the word “militia” in the 2nd Amendment. How often have you heard this word included in the gun-control debates? Our “militia” now is probably the National Guard and they’re provided with weapons when needed.
I’m not against guns; I own guns but I resent people using the chapter title, but not reading the chapter, to have a “right” to own guns. Gun ownership is like a driver’s license — a privilege and a responsibility and also carries restrictions.

WRONG! The right to drive a vehicle is not protected by the Constitution. Gun ownership is. It's called the Second Amendment. One thing further: The U.S. government does NOT need a right to form a militia or bear arms. It does so by the sovereignty granted to it by will of we the people. The second amendment was designed to protect the people from the government not the government from the people. Let's get that straight.
It's a "right" but we need to be responsible too.
For most Americans (excluding former felons and the mentally incompetent) gun ownership is NOT a privilege; It is a right. "The RIGHT of the citizens to keep and bear arms shall NOT be infringed." Since the National Guard is dependent on the federal government for its arms and even its very existence it would hardly be likely to take up arms against its boss. As Wade Betts stated in his letter today, the founding fathers had just fought a revolution to escape an oppressive government and the American Revolution was made possible because the people owned their own weapons of defense. By the way, "militias" in those days were local entities under the command of local officers elected by local votes. It had nothing to do with the now centralized national guard.
There are 2 parts to gun ownership entitlement.
The militia (comma) the right of the people. Don't turn 2 separate entities into 1.
