LETTER: Pasquotank needs voter ID law

4 Comments | Leave a Comment

I wholeheartedly agree with the letter to the editor voicing support for the voter photo ID bill. I’m thankful that we still have people who are willing to take a stand. America is in the mess that it’s in because too many stand on the sidelines in silence.

As the letter-writer stated, to be against voter ID, you have something to hide. As for me, to be against a voter ID law is like taking the 5th Amendment: you must have something to hide.

Recently, we’ve had people from this area accused of voter fraud. One lived in Virginia but voted in Elizabeth City. Another voted twice. A City Council race in Elizabeth City is undecided because of the suspicion of voter fraud. A county commissioner from a nearby county is living in one area but represents another area. This is wrong. This is fraud, and we need something to end this crime. Voter ID will do this in the same way Prilosec treats heartburn: it will stop fraud before it happens.

I’ve contacted five of our commissioners. Three support requiring voters to show photo IDs at the polls and two oppose it. Two others are on the fence. For a local law requiring a voter ID to pass, we need one more commissioner.

It’s unfortunate that we have a left-wing organization involved in this issue: the NAACP. I see nothing wrong with blacks or whites giving their opinion as individuals. The NAACP is against voter IDs for whatever reason. The NAACP is not as right about things as we are led to believe.

It’s sad when politicians don’t have the backbone to stand up to pressure groups who are only interested in control. It’s also sad when politicians’ souls are for sale. I call them lap dogs. We have commissioners who are lap dogs.

Man up, commissioners. The voters trusted you, so act in a responsible way. You owe it to the citizens of Pasquotank County. A voter ID law guarantees the principle of one man, one vote, and one woman, one vote. It also protects freedom, while voter fraud destroys freedom. This is such an easy choice, such a responsible choice.

Faith in the system

Faith in the system is essential. Once one begins to doubt the value of his vote a blow has been dealt democracy. We hear much anguish from politicians over poor voter turnout, but when the system is in doubt (and politicians refuse to fix it) there is less incentive to "turn out." Too many times decision makers throw out common sense and ignore the will of the people who are supposed to be their boss. And our politicians and courts simply MUST stop pandering to activist groups who clearly have agendas incompatible with the democratic process.

I was astounded

I myself was shocked to learn that my ID was not required to vote.

I asked the lady who was signing off in the book why they did not need my ID and was told they were not allowed to ask for it. I asked her what would I do if I came to vote and someone else had already voted for me ... SHE HAD NO ANSWER ... AND THATS THE SCARIEST PART OF ALL!

NO ID? Is this what it has come to in this country?

No wonder we have millions of people from all over the world trying their hardest to get here ...

It would not take much to stop the fraud that is happening across our country.

Stopping fraud is as simple as using common sense ... you would not use a bank if they refused to ask for identification from anyone trying to withdraw funds from your account! Why should we, the taxpayers of PASQ county put up with a policy which ignores what we know is happening?

I am continually amazed at the arrogance of some officials the WE have elected.

Here's to hoping a change is swiftly forthcoming.

Our Freedom is only secure if we are willing to defend it to the death ...

I'm with Mr. Pickell ... well said sir!

Voter ID I totally agree with

Voter ID
I totally agree with your comments. I believe they were clear and well presented. I wonder if anything concrete will ever be done on the ‘fraud cases’ you commented on?

I couldn't agree more with

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Pickell. Some additional considerations - how does requiring a picture ID disenfranchise anyone? Most people have occasion to cash a check and are required to provide photo ID to do so. Many buy cigarettes or alcohol - and to do so they can be asked to show ID. I'd venture to say that not many adults don't have some government issued ID card.
