Letter: School security fund a good idea

1 Comment | Leave a Comment

I was delighted to read in the Sunday edition that Andy and Karin Montero selected a pressing issue in our community and developed a plan to address the problem. Security in the schools is a nationwide phenomenon that has to be addressed by all.

It my understanding that their goal is to raise $50,000 to bolster security at the K-12 public schools in Pasquotank County. That is a noble, honorable, proactive and unselfish initiative on their part, and we all should work to assure that this is a successful endeavor.

Too often we are deterred from doing something positive by waiting for the federal, state or local government to act. This is a prime example of what we can do as a community, because the road map has been presented, and it is not burdensome. It was stated that if every family with a child in the school would donate $5, the fund would grow quickly. That sounds like something doable and attainable.

Incidentally, I do not have any children in the school system, but I will assist in this project, because it is everyone’s problem, not just those that have children in the public schools. As it is stated in the Bible: “God help those who help themselves.”

The obligations of citizenship

Amen Mr. Brown. I'm willing to do that and a bit more. It's what citizenship is all about. Incidentally, the popular quote "God helps those who help themselves" is a quote from Benjamin Franklin. It doesn't appear in the Bible.
