Letter: Students shine on Constitution

0 Comments | Leave a Comment

This past Saturday morning I had the honor of being a judge at the American Legion District One Constitutional Oratorical contest hosted by the John A. Holmes High School Army JROTC. The contest was held at the old Chowan County Courthouse.

It was a pleasure to witness three students, from different regions, compete on the different aspects of the U.S. Constitution. They were all quite knowledgeable and made great presentations. Deciding a winner was difficult.

The American Legion is to be commended for their work keeping knowledge of the Constitution at the forefront of students’ education. At the same time, the Legion provides a venue for students who want to practice their oratorical skills.

Special kudos to Lt. Col. George Nelson and his cadets for a most professional job in hosting the event. The JROTC at Holmes is quite generous with its time in assisting in community events.

It was a shame that more people did not attend and view the superior oratorical presentations. It was also unfortunate there was no press coverage at the event. In an age where our kids are often criticized for not doing their best, more positive coverage of high school students is warranted. This was such an event.

Next year I urge you to attend the event and witness this generation’s representatives in an extremely positive light.
