One of your recent letter-writers has succinctly and correctly stated about all that needs to be said regarding the voting rights of college students in Elizabeth City. If, as one student said, she has the right to vote simply because she spends money and adds to the local economy in Elizabeth City then may I say that I should be able to vote there as well. Most of my disposable income (more than 90 percent) is spent in Elizabeth City but it does not qualify me to vote there or run for office in that little burg. I’ve also rented many motel rooms in Elizabeth City, but that does not give me voting privileges either because I was only a part-time resident and transient — just like the students at Elizabeth City State University.
