The recent controversy regarding Elizabeth City State University students participating in Elizabeth City’s city council elections is nothing more than a smokescreen to prohibit and suppress all students — both African-American and Caucasian — and middle-class voters from going to the polls. It should be noted that this strategy of voter suppression is a national phenomenon which has far-reaching implications in local, state and national elections.
