Player of the Year Cory Plymel

Many players can excel in a single area of their sport. Camden's Cory Plymel dominated in many.

A 1,000-yard rusher. The team's leading tackler. A threat on special teams. Plymel was a threat in every aspect of the game, which is how he earned The Daily Advance Football Player of the Year.
"He's just a football player," Bruins coach Scott Jones said. "He's a hundred miles an hour, and he practices as hard as he plays on both sides of the ball."
Plymel, a senior who will walk on at
Campbell next year, carried the ball 143 times for 1046 yards — a 7.3 yard average — and 14 touchdowns. Though primarily a threat to run up the middle, he could also gain yards on the outside with the option.
"Him and Johnnie (Spence) complemented each other pretty well," Jones said. "I don't think anybody really took both of them away."
Defensively, Plymel led the Bruins in tackles for the second year in a row and has amassed more than 300 for his career.
On special teams, he also excelled, blocking five kicks through the first five games of the season. But it was just the threat he posed that made opposing punters less effective.
"Blocking a kick is just wanting to," Jones said. "Several times he didn't block them, but he's going to rush the punter and make him think about 44 coming off the edge. He's going to cause a lot of bad punts, probably more than he blocked."
With all of the things he did for the team, Plymel was a valuable asset. He had to sit out the Williamston game after suffering a slight concussion the previous week. Jones thinks Plymel could have made the difference in the 20-14 loss.
"He's on every special team, and he barely came off the field," Jones said. "That's because he's such a valuable part of our team. ... If I had a whole team full of kids like him, we'd go an awful long way."
