Currituck gets offensive
Lady Knights dominate second half in 1-0 win

BARCO — When a team gets chance after chance on offense, it will eventually score.

That's what happened for the Currituck Lady Knights as they dominated the game offensively in the second half, eventually turning one of several corner kicks into a 1-0 win over the C. B. Aycock Lady Falcons in the first round of the 3A state soccer playoffs on Wednesday.

"We moved the ball and passed it better than we had," Currituck coach Bill Mackin said. "We came out and played hard — went to the ball hard."

After the teams played to a scoreless first half, Andrea Paramenter battled with an Aycock defender on a cornr kick from Dori Brooks early in the second half for the game's only goal.

"She gave us an offensive threat we've really been lacking," Mackin said. "She played a really great game."

It was one of many chances the Lady Knights got in the second half. Currituck took 11 of their 16 shots after the break.

"The second half was all us," Mackin said. "They had a couple of strikers who were dangerous and we denied them the ball for the most part in the second half. They were a good team, but we played well."

The Lady Falcons played right with Currituck in the first half, getting four shots, mostly early in the game. While they had some solid chances, the Lady Knights' defense held up.

"Our defenders — Arika Brown and Mercedez (Rouse) and Sydney Kirk held it all together," Mackin said. "They beat their central players and that set the tone."

Currituck had its best scoring chance of the first half as time expired. Paramenter was tripped in the goal box by a defender at the end of a run, leading to a penalty kick. But Aycock goalie Courtney Sheeks stopped the kick and the half ended.

In the second half, Aycock rarely got the ball deep into their offensive end, a stark contrast to the back-and-forth play the teams exchanged in the first half.

"Katie Rosier and Caitlin Davis stepped up their play and started owning the middle," Mackin said. "It the first half, the middle was slightly theirs. In the second half, it was all ours."

Lady Knights' goalkeeper Emily Adams had three saves. Her counterpart, Sheeks, had 11.

Currituck will play host to (14-6-1), 7-2 winners against Washington in the first round, on Saturday in a second round match-up.
