Roundup: Currituck bows out of playoffs
Jacksonville knocks out Lady Knights, 7-0

BARCO — Once again, the Mideastern Conference is the bane of Currituck soccer.

For the third straight year, the Lady Knights were eliminated by a team from the Mideast. This time, it was Jacksonville that defeated Currituck, 7-0, on Friday night.

"There was nothing we could have done to have changed the outcome," Currituck coach Bill Mackin said. "That was as good a team as we have played and we've played good teams. We've played First Flight and Great Bridge, and other teams as well, that I thought were talented. They had superior athletes. They moved the ball."

Jacksonville scored three times in the first dozen minutes. Goals from Stephanie Spring Britney Joiner and Jessica Barton gave the visitors the lead they would take into halftime.

Mackin was pleased with the way the defense responded to playing from behind.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of our ladies," Mackin said. "We got down three goals in about 10 minutes and we held them until halftime. They stuck in there. It's easy to quit and I didn't see any quit."

Brittany Tadilla scored a pair of second half goals and Casey Naylor and Michelle Lemaire added one each for Jacksonville (15-6-1).

The Lady Cardinals outshot Currituck, 32-4, in the game. Lady Knights goalkeeper Emily Adams had 12 saves.

Mackin appreciated the effort of his four seniors — Caitlin Davis, Sydney Kirk, Katie Rozier and Amber Stegall — who played their final game.

"I thought Emily played well and I thought our seniors really showed tremendous heart and they have really put this program (in a good position)," he said. "We're going to be good in the years to come because of them."

S. Brunswick 4, Pasquotank 0

The Panthers' bats were silent in a loss in the first round of the 2A state baseball playoffs on Friday.

Two South Brunswick pitchers combined on a two-hitter and the Cougars came up with the big hits to advance.

The loss ruined an otherwise good performance by Panthers pitcher Andrew Womble. Womble went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing just two earned runs.
