HERTFORD — In response to racer requests, Northeast Dragway has added two 4.90/5.90 index races a month to the season schedule in a grass roots effort to build a program that will attract drivers from far and wide. Driver Jimmy Williams heads up the program with the hope it will eventually become a championship class.
"All it will take is for people to try it once, and they'll be hooked," says Williams. "We are the only track running index races on a regular schedule"

Kurt Bosh, owner of Magnum Machine in Chesapeake, Va., rocked the 4.90 Class with his Dodge Daytona. Bosh had a .434 reaction time on the four-tenths pro tree and ran 4.927 at 128.90 mph in the final round against Hallett Latimer, also of Chesapeake, to claim his first win of the year.
Jerry Fair of Virginia Beach, Va., and Brad Ward of Hertford, winner of the last 5.90 index race, were paired for the final round with Ward looking to double up. The evenly-matched Chevy Camaros left the line clean and crossed the finish line with Fair leading the way by a margin of .023 for the closest finish of the night.
If you were to pull up beside Phillip Wiggins in traffic, his aging Hyundai Excel with fading paint would not provoke any thoughts of drag racing. His shy smile would not reveal the fierce competitor inside. Those who pull beside him on the drag strip know the truth. The truth being, he rarely loses. He captured his third straight win in the Street class with his final round win over Troy Styron of Virginia Beach.
In the Top Eliminator Class, Mike Mayo and Cheryl Sundstrom of Chesapeake were both hoping to secure their first win of the year. With identical reaction times it was another close race to the finish with Mayo running closer to his 4.86 dial and turning on the win light.
Jesse Casper of Edenton scored his second win of the season in the Modified Class by defeating Bobby Govan in the final round. Casper had a .565 reaction time and ran 6.08 on his 6.05 to take the win by a margin of .032.
Big Kev Richardson has been in the final round of the Pro Bike class five of the seven races completed this year. For three weeks straight he had been runner-up, unable to grasp the first-place trophy. Persistence finally paid off and Richardson roared past Sammy Chellis of Carrollton to take the win at 113.88 mph. Richardson presented his trophy to "Momma Tina" Shannon in honor of Mother's Day.
In the Junior Dragster class, Oscar Brookins and Matt French had a double break-out run with the win going to Brookins who was closest to his dial. This was the first final round for both racers this year.
Racing continues this weekend with Test and Tune Friday night from 7 to 10 p.m. followed by bracket racing on Saturday. Gates open at 3 p.m., time runs begin at 5 p.m. and eliminations start around 7 p.m. Log onto www.northeastdragway.net for more details and upcoming events.
