Few players could match Camden's Weston Dodson dynamic on the baseball field. Not only was he a spark offensively, he roamed center field at Camden, one of the area's biggest parks, and was often the culprit when opponents had extra base hits taken away.

"On and off the field, he's such a great kid," Camden coach Mickey Drew said. "Athletically, he plays three (sports) and is great at all three, but he's a much better person than an athlete in my opinion and that's what makes him so special to coach and play with. He's a high quality individual and you can't replace that."

Dodson hit .488 from the lead off position with 13 doubles, 27 RBIs and 36 runs scored. All those numbers led the Bruins, who advanced to the third round of the 1A state playoffs.

"We think he set a record for doubles in a season for the school and he's going to be close to that record as a career guy as well," Drew said. "He's just a tough, tough out. Talk to any of the coaches in the area that played us and his name was the first one mentioned as guys they didn't want to have to pitch to in a big situation."

In the outfield, Drew cannot recall Dodson making an error and his defense and range was a help for the pitchers.

"He made a lot of base hits turn into outs," Drew said. "It's not a knock on any of our pitchers, but we didn't have a dominating pitcher. We had guys that threw strikes and hit spots and we knew we were going to give up some well-hit balls from time to time and Weston just stood out there and caught them all. That crushes another team when they hit a ball that they know is a hit and it ends up harmlessly in the bottom of his glove."

Dodson is a three-sport athlete, also excelling in football and basketball. He will attend Virginia Wesleyan and play basketball.
