BARCO — Last season, the Currituck volleyball team lost the first two games of its first regular season match with Northeastern. Then, they lost their best player to injury.

The Lady Knights bounced back in dramatic fashion, winning the final three games for an improbable road victory.

Tuesday's match may not have been as thrilling as that one, but there was plenty of drama in the Lady Knights' 25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-5 win in the Northeastern Coastal Conference opener for both teams.

"Currituck's a great team this year," Northeastern coach Tim Brown said. "They're very deep and well-coached. Obviously, Sarah Griggs is making a statement already that she's one of the best players around."

Griggs played a solid all-around match for Currituck (5-2, 1-0 NCC), recording five of her 11 kills in the first game. In game three, she was dominant in the service game, getting five points, two of them aces.

Northeastern had a dominant offensive performer of its own in Morghan Stallings. She had six kills in game one, five in game two and 17 overall. Stallings also served up eight points, all over the final three games.

Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, Stallings' lone point in game five was the only one they earned with the serve. Northeastern's other four came on side outs.

"We were playing well," Brown said. "We played very well for four games and so did Currituck. When we got in that fifth one, We were waiting for them to lose, to make mistakes. I thought some of our players should have stepped up and made some big plays in that fifth game. We just didn't make them."

Northeastern's service game was paced by Nettie Marshall, who had 12 points.

Currituck's Emily Adams finished the match with five of her 10 service points. Lacey Nelson contributed 10 kills and a pair of blocks to the win.

But two newer players also stepped up for the Lady Knights. Ashley Petitt had six of her eight points in game one and later added five kills and a block.

"Ashley has impressed me a lot this year," Currituck coach Sara Goblinger said. "This is her first year playing varsity. She's definitely stepped it up and has really come a long way since JV last year."

Ashton Mizelle had five of her match-high 14 points in game one.

"This was her first regular season match," Goblinger said. "She had an awesome showing for her first night out."

But despite the victory, Goblinger would like to see her team play more consistently.

"I'm excited about our win as a whole, but overall, I'm not happy with the way we played the two losing games," Goblinger said. "We were either way up or way down. It's more of a mental game at this point. We need to move past that."

TENNIS Edenton 9, Williamston 0

The Lady Aces dropped just six games in their six singles matches as they swept Williamston on Monday.

Alex Brusko defeated Hillary Newcomb and Katherine Elliot bested Karson Edwards at No. 3 and 4 singles matches, respectively, 6-0, 6-0.

Caroline Small beat Sarah Chesson at No. 2 and Meredith Laverty topped Samantha Jones at No. 5 by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. Isabel Boehling also lost just one game against Brittany Keener, but it was in the second set.

Elizabeth Leary was victorious at No. 1 singles over Kate Matthews 6-0, 6-3.

The six singles players paired off to sweep the doubles as well, with the closest match being Small and Elliot's win at No. 1 over Matthews and Edwards by a 10-5 margin.
