High School Roundup: Power surge fuels Camden win over Jones

Kayley Lewis went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs as Camden pounded out 15 hits in a 12-2 win over Jones Senior in the opening round of the 1A state softball playoffs.

Lewis had two doubles and a triple among her four hits as Camden struck back from an early two-run deficit with seven runs in the first two innings, and then four more in the fourth and another in the fifth to finish off the game.

Jaycee Stales (2-for-2) drove in a pair of runs, and four others — Breanne Brite, Lindsay Russell, Shelby Tillery and Jordan McDaniels — had an RBI each for the Lady Bruins.

Camden will face North Duplin, 17-0 winners over Tarboro, in a second round game on Saturday. 

Rosewood 10, Perquimans 0: Rosewood shut out the Lady Pirates Tuesday in the opening round of the 1A softball playoffs in Hertford.

Perquimans, which finished second in the Coastal 10, ends its season at 14-3.

2A State Playoffs

Currituck 13, Roanoke Rapids 4: The Lady Knights rallied from a four-run deficit and used a nine-run fifth inning to pull away from Roanoke Rapids Tuesday in the opening round of the 2A state softball playoffs.

Currituck (13-4) next faces South Lenoir, 10-3 winners over Northside.

Bunn 5, Edenton 1: Bunn ended the Lady Aces’ season in the first round of the 2A state softball playoffs on Tuesday.

Edenton, which ended the regular season fourth in the Northeastern Coastal Conference, finishes with an 8-10 record. 

Washington 13, Pasquotank 0: A nine-run sixth inning propelled Washington over the Lady Panthers in the first round of the 2A state softball playoffs on Tuesday.

Pasquotank, which took third in the Northeastern Coastal Conference, finishes the season at 9-4.

Girls soccer

1A State Playoffs

Camden 9, James Kenan 0: The Lady Bruins scored three goals in the first 10 minutes and never looked back in its shutout over James Kenan in the first round of the 1A state girls soccer playoffs on Tuesday.

Caroline Robinson finished off the game via mercy rule with a penalty kick goal for the Lady Bruins.

Camden (11-3-2) moves onto the second round of the playoffs against either Tarboro or Pender. 

2A State Playoffs

Randleman 3, Currituck 0: Host Randleman ended the Lady Knights’ season with a shutout win on Tuesday in the first round of the 2A state girls soccer playoffs.

Currituck, which finished third in the Northeastern Coastal Conference, ends its season at 10-5-2.

Baseball

1A State Playoffs

North Duplin 4, Camden 1: North Duplin scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings and made it stand up to end the Bruins’ season in the first round of the 1A state baseball playoffs.

Hunter Mason had Camden’s lone RBI in the bottom of the seventh, as his groundout to short brought in Mark Nelson.

Christian Latham pitched a complete game for the Bruins. Latham gave up nine hits and four runs while striking out six.

Camden, second place finishers in the Coastal 10, ends its season at 16-6.

Perquimans 15, Southside 1: The Pirates took care of business in the opening round of the 1A state baseball playoffs with a convincing win Tuesday.

In Saturday’s second round, Perquimans (22-3) will host Spring Creek, 10-4 winners over South Creek.

2A State Playoffs

Currituck 5, Bertie 3: Evan Voliva drove in three runs and helped rally the Knights from an early deficit to survive a scare from Bertie in the first round of the 2A state baseball playoffs.

Currituck (19-2) will host Ayden-Grifton in the second round on Saturday. Ayden-Grifton defeated Beddingfield 7-2 in its opening round game.

Edenton 4, Roanoke Rapids 0: Aces right-hander Allen Tynch pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 in their win Tuesday in the opening round of the 2A state baseball playoffs.

Jack Downum had two RBIs as Edenton (16-4) didn’t allow a Roanoke Rapids runner to reach third.

Josh Bass also picked up two hits for the night and Zack Kelly had a RBI single to help the Aces.

Edenton will travel to North Lenoir in the second round on Saturday. North Lenoir defeated Northside 10-0 in its opening round game on Tuesday.
