Knights score big win over Cape Fear
There’s no getting around it, it was a good day for local soccer teams at The Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase in Wilson Saturday.
Edenton, Northeastern and Currituck all came away with wins.
None was bigger than the Knights beating Cape Fear 3-2 on a goal by Kiel Bollero.
Cape Fear is a 4A team ranked third in the state in one website poll and is coming off a third-place finish in last year’s state tournament.
“I’m really pleased, the boys played great,” Currituck coach Mark Chappell said after his team improved to 2-1-1. “We out-shot them 12-5 and had enough chances that it could have been 5-2. If we can keep playing like this, we’re going to be okay.”
Goals by Logan Rash and Kevin Cosnahan put the Knights up 2-1 at the half. Cape Fear tied it at 2-2, but Bollero netted the winner.
Chappel said the key was a lineup shuffle.
“We changed our system to a flat four and moved some midfielders back on defense,” he said. “Faustin Pierre, Cody Aarestad, Garrett Spear and Clint Squire — our outside four — did a great job of shutting people down.”
Another plus was the return of midfielder Aaron Baker, who has missed the past two weeks with an injury. He and Bollero, moved from wing to midfield, were consistently beating opponents to the ball.
Northeastern 2, Nash Central 1: Eric Allen scored a header off a corner kick by Joel Abbitt 10 minutes into the game, Cameron Horn converted a cross from Dylan Owney in the 49th minutes and the Eagles held on following a Nash Central goal in the 56th minute.
Northeastern coach Waylon Joyner credited keeper Tanner Cain and fullbacks Eric Allen, Alex Pharr, Miles Cooper and Jake Mahle with outstanding defensive play.
Edenton 2, Beddingfield 1: Tyrone Leary and Tanner Brusko scored the Aces’ goals.
