New Edenton coach Collins meets players, coaches

“I wanted them to know it’s all about academics. I want them to know that we’re academics first, football second, hence the term student-athlete. It’s important to me, and it’s important to our program. I’m sure coach Mattera preached that. The kids know where I stand on that.”

Student-athlete??

How did this term, "student-athlete", come into high school usage? What does it mean? In this instance we are talking about teenagers who are in high school. These are students - pure and simple! Student-athlete is now being challenged in the courts by athletes who are attending some NCAA schools. Will that have any meaning for high school students who play sports?
