The state soccer playoff are set with five area teams participating. All first-round games are slated to be played on Wednesday.
In 1A, Camden (15-4-2), the No. 2 seed from the Four Rivers, will host Southwest Onslow at 6 p.m. Other Four Rivers teams that qualified are Manteo (14-5-1), the league’s top seed, and Southside (11-7), Northside ((12-6) and Cape hatteras (11-6-1), all wild-card entries. The Redskins host Cape Hatteras, the Seahawks will travel to Dixon and the Panthers will be at Spring Creek.
There are three area teams in the 2A bracket. Pasquotank (6-7-1) earned the No. 2 seed from the Northeastern Coastal Conference and will host Croatan at 6:30 p.m.
Northeastern (7-7-2) was the NCC’s No. 3 team and will be on the road at East Duplin for a 6 p.m. match. Edenton (8-10-2) was a surprise wild-card pick, the only wild card in the 2A field, and will travel to Tarboro. Another team of note in the 2A bracket is First Flight (11-4-3), the NCC champion. Currituck earned the top 3A seed from the NCC and will play host to Washington at 6 p.m. The NCC has seeding priority this year, meaning the Knights will play at home for as long as they survive in the tournament.
Also in the 3A field is Hertford (0-10), which will host D.H. Conley in a first-round match-up.
CROSS COUNTRY
Currituck’s Kelsey Temple and Sean Botzenhart earned All-Region honors and qualified for next week’s state cross country meet in Winston-Salem. Temple finished seventh overall at the 3A East Regional girls’ meet on Saturday, finishing in 21:25. The Lady Knights missed out on a state invitation as a team, placing sixth in the 14-team field. Only the top four teams advance.
Also scoring for Currituck was Sarah Rozier (17th), Emily Latimer (21st), Leighanne Davis (38th) and Lauren Ward (47th), for a total of 128 points, 19 points out of fourth place.
In the boys’ race, Botzenhart ran 17:42 to place eighth overall, leading the Knights to a seventh-place finish out of 18 teams. Other scorers for the Knights were Kiel Bollero (17th), Kevin Cosnahan (23rd), Justin Martin (65th) and Brady Cartwright (69th). Currituck finsihed with 176 points, 40 behind the fourth-place team.
