Although the Edenton Steamers’ home game with the Petersburg Generals Sunday night was suspended due to rain, there was plenty of news on the Steamers front.

As a result of Fayetteville’s 10-6 loss to Columbia Sunday night, the Steamers (37-10), who won the first- and second-half titles in the North Division, are assured of having the best overall record in the Coastal Plain League regular season and will be the top seed in the Petitt Cup playoffs, which begin Aug. 2.

The Steamers, ranked No. 1 among college summer league teams by Perfect Game USA, will have home-field advantage in each round of the playoffs as long as they are still alive.

Also Sunday, it was announced by the CPL that Steamers second baseman Joe Wendle has set a single-season record for hits. Wendle, who leads the league in hitting (.424), has 78 hits and still has eight games remaining.

The old record of 77 was set by Brandon Scott of Wilson in 2007.

Sunday’s Steamers-Generals game will be completed as part of a doubleheader Saturday in Petersburg.
