EDENTON — Having already swept the North Division first- and second-half titles and clinched the top seed in the upcoming Petitt Cup playoffs, there doesn’t seem to be much left for the Edenton Steamers to play for as the regular season winds down.
Steamers coach Dirk Kinney admits it might be challenging to keep the team — which was atop the Perfect Game USA national college summer league rankings for the third straight week Wednesday — motivated until the playoffs begin Aug. 2.
“So I told them they might as well go out and set as many records as they can,” he said.
In Tuesday night’s 9-8 victory over the Morehead City Marlins, the Steamers began the final push on what should be a major overhaul of their record book. Two individual records were set and a team mark tied.
Ryan Brenner, who scored the winning run by stealing third and then home as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, became the single-season stolen base leader. The junior outfielder from Miami of Ohio, who leads the Coastal Plain League in steals, has 31 swipes, erasing the previous mark of 30 set by Kevin Reynolds in 2005.
Earlier in the game, junior reliever Dustin Quattrocchi of Southern Illionois made his 32nd appearance, eclipsing the old record of 30, set by Daniel Hall in 1999.
Later, closer Ethan Cole, a sophomore from Northeast Texas Community College, collected the Steamers’ 20th save of the season, tying a record set in 2005. Cole has 11 of those saves.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Steamers had already established two individual records and two team marks.
Joe Wendle, the Coastal Plain League’s leading hitter (.420), is now the Steamers record-holder for hits (79) and total bases (104) and has a good chance to break as many as four other individual marks: Average (.377), runs (47, he has 44), slugging percentage (.540, his is .553) and on-base percentage (.472, he’s at .484). Wendle’s hit total is also a CPL record.
From a team standpoint, the Steamers (38-10) have set records for triples (12), RBIs (278) and walks (243) and will surely surpass the club-record 39 victories posted by the 2007 team. They are also a good bet to set new standards for runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, total bases, stolen bases, slugging average and winning percentage.
Wendle, by the way, is one of the two leading candidates to be named the CPL Hitter of the Year. The other was also on display Tuesday night at Hicks Field — Morehead City first baseman Chase McDonald.
Both have had stunning seasons.
Wendle, a junior from West Chester University, leads the CPL in batting, hits and runs and is fifth in RBIs (36). McDonald, a freshman from East Carolina, leads the league in RBIs (46) and is second in hitting (.404) and home runs (12).
The Hitter of the Year will be decided in a vote of league coaches and members of the CPL office.
While Wendle will get Kinney’s vote, the Steamers coach says it figures to be a tough call for the other voters.
“They’re two completely different kinds of hitters,” Kinney said. “Joey hits the ball to all fields and Chase is a power-and-pull guy.
“Both of them are very good. I think you might have to make them Co-Hitters of the Year. They’d both deserve it.”
One place where Wendle could have an edge over McDonald is consistency. Wendle has hits in 34 of his last 35 games — including a 13-game hitting streak and another streak that stands at 21 going into tonight’s game at Outer Banks. His batting average in that 35-game stretch is an astounding .486.
CPL assistant commissioner Justin Sellers doesn’t have the documentation to prove it, but he believes Wendle’s current streak is the longest in league history.
“All I know is Joey is doing things that have never been done before in this league,” Kinney said. “I’ve never seen a guy hit like this for so long. Even when he makes outs, he’s hitting the ball hard.”
Should either Wendle or McDonald win the batting title with an average above .400, they would become only the second CPL hitter ever to finish with an average that high.
Jimmy Gallagher of the Peninsula Pilots hit .423 in 2006.
