In a see-saw affair, the Edenton Steamers got an RBI triple from Joe Wendle and a run-scoring double from Zach Stewart in the 10th inning to defeat the Morehead City Marlins 9-7 at Morehead City Sunday night.
The win improved the Steamers’ record in the North Division second-half standings to 3-0, their overall mark to 22-8 and ran their record against non-division foes to 4-1 on the year.
The game featured numerous lead changes, two in the ninth inning when Edenton scored three runs to take a 7-6 lead, but closer Ethan Cole was unable to hold it in the bottom of the inning.
Brett Christopher’s two-run single highlighted the Steamers’ ninth inning rally.
Edenton got off to a strong start behind Brooks Fiala, who came into the game as the Coastal Plain League’s earned-run-average leader.
Fiala was staked to a 4-1 lead through five innings, but Morehead City (2-1, 16-5) hit three home runs during his six-inning stint and took a 6-4 lead after seven innings. Fiala allowed five earned runs.
Wendle finished with three hits and scored three runs, Stewart had two hits and three RBIs, Ryan Brenner had two hits and two stolen bases and Tim Saunders had two hits.
Although he blew the save, Cole got the win and saw his record go to 5-1.
The Steamers are at Wilson Monday and are off Tuesday before hosting Peninsula on Tuesday.
