HAMPTON, Va -- In a wild first-round game of the Petitt Cup playoffs, the Edenton Steamers outlasted the Peninsula Pilots 10-8 in 10 innings Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.

Although the top-seeded Steamers (45-11), who host the No. 8 Pilots (27-30) in Game 2 Friday at Hicks Field, banged out 15 hits, it was poor fielding by the home team that made the difference.

The Steamers scored two runs in the tenth on only one hit as Peninsula pitcher Deshorn Lake made two errors and committed a wild pitch. Adam Giacalone, who had the only hit in the inning, scored on the wild pitch. Brett Christopher, who reach on a Lake error, scored on another miscue by the Pilot pitcher.

Peninsula, which has lost all six of its home games with the Steamers, made seven errors in the game.

The Steamers had rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

Peninsula closer Patrick Scoggin walked the bases loaded in the ninth before he gave way to Lake. A throwing error by catcher Cameron Cecil allowed the first run to score. Ryan Brenner drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Tim Saunders singled in another before Lake could get out of the inning.

Edenton was ahead 5-4 in the eighth inning when the Pilots lit up reliever Jordan Egan to take an 8-5 lead. A bases-loaded double by Cecil knocked in three runs. The other run came home when Christopher made an error in left that scored Cecil.

It was the lone Steamers' error.

Brian Blasik led the way for Edenton. He went 5-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and scored twice. He was also hit by a pitch. Saunders had two hits and two RBIs. Zach Stewart added two hits and drove in a run. Six other Steamers had one hit.

Closer Ethan Cole (6-1) got the win despite allowing a walk to the Pilots' first batter in the 10th. He struck out four of the seven batters he faced in a two-inning stint.

The Steamers, who have won 13 in a row at home, can end the series Friday. If they lose, Game 3 will be Saturday at Hicks Field.
