KILL DEVIL HILLS -- The Edenton Steamers equaled their longest win streak of this dominating Coastal Plain League season when they routed the Outer Banks Daredevils 13-4 Wednesday night.

It was the 11th straight win for the Steamers (16-1 second half, 35-9 overall), who have not lost since July 8 when they were handed a 9-7 defeat by the Daredevils.

The victory also put the Steamers within hailing distance of the franchise record for victories in a season (39), set back in 2007. Edenton, the nation's top-ranked college summer league team, has 11 regular-season games remaining.

The win also gave the Steamers an eight-game lead over Fayetteville (26-17) for the league's best record. The team with the highest overall winning percentage at the end of the regular season will have home-field advantage throughout the Petitt Cup playoffs.

As has been the case for much of the current win streak, the Steamers did it on offense. They scored in double digits for the fifth time in the past two weeks and are averaging over eight runs a game during the win streak.

This one was actually close early. The visiting Steamers led by only 1-0 after four innings. But they exploded for five runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh to put Outer Banks to rout.

Vinnie Mejia's two-run homer and two Daredevils errors highlighted the fifth inning and a two-run single by Brian Blasik and two more Outer Banks errors were the key plays in the seventh.

Joe Wendel ran his hitting streak to 17 games with a three-hit night. He also scored three times and drove in a pair of runs.

Mejia had three hits and three RBIs and Ryan Brenner collected three hits and three runs.

Brett Christopher and Kevin Whitehead contributed two hits to the 17-hit attack and Blasik knocked in three runs.

Roster newcomer Johnathan Sanchez improved to 2-0 by pitching 5-1/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.

The Steamers will play the second game of a four-game road trip Thursday at Peninsula.
