The John A. Holmes boys’ basketball team continued its perfect season with recent wins over Northeastern, Currituck and Bertie.

The Aces (11-0, 0-0 AAC) defeated Northeastern (1-7, 0-2), 79-49, Jan. 9 at home.

Senior Mitjonta Stanley led the Aces in scoring with 31 points, 12 of which were scored on three-pointers. He also had six rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Also scoring in double-digits were Keenan Downing with 17 points and Jewell Coston with 10 points. Downing also had six rebounds.

The Aces (11-0, 0-0 AAC) traveled Tuesday night to play its first conference game at Camden. Results were unavailable at press time.

John A. Holmes 78, Currituck 54: BARCO — The Aces remained unbeaten in non-conference play Wednesday, Jan. 8, with a convincing win at Currituck.

A 19-6 second quarter in favor of the Aces separated the two teams.

Senior Keimonte Raynor and junior Jewell Coston both scored 15 points in the win, while senior Mitjonta Stanley scored 14 and Keenan Downing scored 13.

Stanley earned five steals and five assists in the win, while Downing came down with five steals and 10 rebounds. Raynor led the team with 12 rebounds.

Currituck (5-5) was paced by senior Dashawn White with 13 points, three steals and three assists as sophomore Carmillo Burton also scored 13 points in the loss.

John A. Holmes 81, Bertie 46: The Aces cruised to the non-conference win over the Falcons at John A. Holmes High School on Monday, Jan. 6, in Edenton.

The Aces led the game 20-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Aces outscored the Falcons 32-14 in the second quarter and 23-6 in the third quarter.

Keimonte Raynor led Holmes with 19 points and seven rebounds, Keenan Downing followed with 19 points and five rebounds, Jewell Coston scored 19 points with four assists and four steals, while Mitjonta Stanley had 10 points, seven steals and six assists in the win.

Kendrick Armstead posted six points, Bobby Wilson had five points, seven assists, and four rebounds, Malachi White had two points, five assists and three steals, Ervin White had a point and two steals, while Tyree Capehart had three blocks with two steals for Holmes.


John A. Holmes 44, Northeastern 31: The Aces girls’ basketball team defeated the Eagles at home.

The first half of the game went back and forth, with the Aces scoring 11 points in the first quarter and five points in the second quarter, while Northeastern scored six points in the first and 12 in the second quarter.

In the second half, the Aces pulled away for the win.

The Aces (8-4) were set to open their conference play Tuesday night with an away game at Camden. Results were not available at press time.

John A. Holmes 52, Currituck 46: The Lady Aces pulled out the non-conference road win over the Lady Knights after outscoring Currituck by 10 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Kaci Drew led the way for Edenton with 18 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

Currituck was led by senior Jade Elliott’s 12 points.

Bertie 40, John A. Holmes 39: The Aces lost the non-conference matchup to the Falcons on Monday, Jan. 6, at John A. Holmes High School.
