As I notice that Christmas parades and other holiday-themed events are taking place across the area this weekend it occurs to me that not long ago I was absorbed in thought about the holiday — “the holiday” in that instance being Independence Day.

I had really been looking forward to going to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving but Jane, Nathan and I were all too sick to make the trip to Raleigh so we stayed home.

Wood ducks are by far my favorite duck species. They’re beautiful and I love to listen to them in flight. I can close my eyes and tell the males from the females. Males whistle and females make a squealing noise.

As a Coast Guard family, we have experienced a wide array of weather patterns storms and disasters as we’ve moved around the country. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been affected indirectly by the Kincade Fire in Northern California.

Today I was shopping in local stores for items to use in upcoming museum programs. I was surprised to find that some of the holiday items on my list were already sold out.

Those who know me know I’m paranoid about leading foragers astray, especially mushroom hunters. Recently, someone asked me to identify a picture of a mushroom in her yard, and it was a giant puffball. They’re common this time of year. They’re also edible when young.

Honoring veterans is entirely appropriate at any time. It certainly doesn’t need to be limited to Veterans Day but I’m glad we have a designated holiday to serve as a kind of reminder and milepost.
