Elizabeth City police are investigating after a shooting victim was transported to the hospital Monday morning.

Officer Lamont Butts said in a press release that the shooting was reported in the 400 block of Grice Street about 8:27 a.m.

Butts said one victim suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center by private vehicle before law enforcement arrived.

Butts said police do not plan to release the shooting victim’s name “at this time.” He said he was unable to answer questions about the victim’s condition or if the victim was still at the hospital Monday afternoon.

Asked if police have any suspects, Butts described the probe as active and in its early stages.

An elementary school blocks from Grice Street was temporarily locked down Monday morning following a report of nearby gunshots, Tammy Sawyer, a spokeswoman for Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools, said. The situation was unrelated to the school, she said.

“The lockdown was issued as a safety precaution and lifted once we received notification from (Pasquotank-Camden) Emergency Management” the threat was over, she said.

It was not clear the lockdown was directly related to the shooting incident on Grice. Butts could not be reached to confirm that it was.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting incident to call the department at 335-4321 or Crime Line at 335-5555.
