February’s First Friday ArtWalk will include just 12 art venues — a perfectly intimate lineup for what’s commonly known as the “month of love.”
Debbie Malenfant, executive director of Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc., said ArtWalkers beginning Friday’s monthly arts showcase at the east end of Main Street can stop in at Muddy Waters Coffeehouse at 100 W. Main between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
There they can create a bowl on a pottery wheel, and for $10, they can take their creation home. Other bowls will be donated to Food Bank of the Albemarle’s Empty Bowls fundraising event in May.
Also on Main Street, artwork by a variety of local artists will be on display at Dear Alchemy Conservatory in the former Southern Hotel building. Michael Yu will also be performing live music.
Arts of the Albemarle, at 516 E. Main, will host artist Tunde Afolayan-Famous who will be debuting his “Enduring Legacies” exhibition. Artwalkers can also view the works of Barbara Wachter and see the entries in AoA’s art competition, “The Rise of Jazz During the Harlem Renaissance.”
At Body Kinect Wellness, at 601 E. Main, Lindsay Doughty will be displaying her hand-made pottery, soaps and bath bombs, and Bella Hickman will be showing off her designed stationary.
Elle Lynn Boutique, at 613 E. Main, will be hosting a “surprise” guest artist, Malenfant said.
Elsewhere, Gene Tick, a local photographer, will show off his work at Eclectic Jewelry & Design at 513 East Fearing Street.
On Water Street, Page After Page Bookstore will host author Sybil Lightfoot, who will be discussing and selling copies of her book, “Eagle With a Broken Wing,” as well as local chocolatier, Brohemian Bromeliad Studios, who will be selling handmade chocolates.
Brackwater Brush Studio & Sanctuary Designs, at 115 N. Water Street, will be hosting artist Tia Fronville.
At Studio 511 Art & Soul, at 116 North Poindexter Street, ArtWalkers can participate in a free family art night by making Valentines that they can take home. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Prior to ArtWalk, parents can drop off their kids at Zaribel’s at 113 North Water Street for a Kids’ Night Out program. For a fee, kids ages 2-12 can enjoy snacks while playing in an indoor bounce house and other games. Pre-registration is encouraged and available by calling 621-3393. Zaribel’s will also be displaying the artworks of Lina Bateman.
After ArtWalk, the music duo Tanglewood will perform live at Coasters Downtown Draught House at 216 N. Poindexter Street, starting at 8 p.m. Solo entertainer BC will be performing at Ghost Harbor Brewery, at 606B East Colonial Avenue, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
