Sentara Albemarle Medical Center isn’t imposing any flu-season age restrictions on visitation to the hospital.

Visitors experiencing cold-like or flu-like symptoms are being encouraged, however, to wear a mask if they visit the hospital.

Annya Soucy, a spokeswoman for Sentara Albemarle, also said last week hospital staff are now required to get vaccinated against the flu.

Some hospitals, including those associated with Greenville-based Vidant Health, announced restrictions last week prohibiting children 12 and younger from visiting family members. Vidant said it was imposing the restrictions because of the high number of people with the flu.

Public health officials across the state confirmed more than 1,700 new flu-like illness cases between Dec. 22-28.

A spokeswoman for the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools said the district so far is not seeing a rise in absences related to the flu this year.
