CAMDEN — A Virginia man was killed Tuesday morning after his truck ran off the road on U.S. Highway 17 in northern Camden County and hit a tree.

Matthew Bozman, 29, of the 700 block of Fallcreek Run, Chesapeake, died in the single-vehicle accident, said Trooper O.E. Calloway of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

According to Calloway, Bozman was driving a red, 2008 F-150 pickup truck southbound on U.S. 17 when the vehicle ran off the road on the right, struck a tree and overturned.

Bozman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not wearing a seatbelt, Calloway said.

Weather did not play a contributing role in the accident, Calloway said. Bozman also appeared to be driving the speed limit when the accident occurred.

The medical examiner performed an external and visual exam, the patrol said. Alcohol and drug use is not suspected, the patrol said. A toxicology screen also was performed — routine in all fatal accidents — and the results of that are still pending, the patrol said.

Calloway said the accident happened on U.S. 17 between the Virginia state line and the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center and was reported about 6:55 a.m.

Tuesday’s accident was the first involving a fatality in the four-county patrol district since the start of the new year, Calloway said.

Editor's note: The story corrects an earlier version that incorrectly stated an autopsy would be performed to determine whether other factors contributed to the wreck.
