The Friends of the Perquimans County Library has named Susan Cox as this year’s Special Friend of the County.
The Friends will be holding a reception in her honor at the Perquimans County Library on June 11 at 2 p.m.
“Susan Cox does so much for the community, not only for Hertford but for the entire county,” said Jeri Oltman, the person that nominated her.
Cox is a Perquimans County native who after more than 20 years of teaching, including serving as a coach at Meredith College and William Peace College, Cox returned to Perquimans County to teach at the middle school. She retired in 2006.
That didn’t end her involvement in education.
For the past eight years she’s served on the on the Perquimans County School Board, where she currently serves as chairperson.
Cox is serving her third term on the Historic Hertford board, where she is currently vice chairperson and entertainment co-chair. She is involved in all the events sponsored by HHI, including the Indian Summer Festival, the Grand Illumination and the unHilly Hundred Bike Ride. Cox also serves on the board of the Carolina Moon Theater Group and sells tickets at her shop “Carolina Trophy.”
Cox has been a member of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce for the last 10 years and has served on the board for the last six and is currently board president. Cox initiated the “Conversations Over Coffee” monthly event and has been the chair of the chamber’s annual banquet and auction fundraiser for three years, and has chaired the Business Expo twice.
Also as a member of the Hertford Rotary, Cox also initiated the “Student of the Month” recognition program. She also substitutes as a meal deliverer for the Senior Center and helps water the flowers that decorate downtown.
