The 2019 high school football season was another standout campaign for high school football teams in the Daily Advance’s coverage area.

John A. Holmes (Albemarle Athletic Conference), Northeastern and Currituck (Northeastern Coastal Conference) won league championship.

Currituck and Northeastern shared the NCC title with Hertford County this fall.

Perquimans improved from a one-win 2018 season to making an appearance in the 1A NCHSAA state playoffs this fall.

Camden and Pasquotank continued to build their programs.

Once again, it was Northeastern and John A. Holmes that played football late into the season, with the Aces appearing in their third consecutive NCHSAA 1AA East Regional championship game.

Northeastern won its second consecutive NCHSAA 2A East Regional championship this season and appeared in the 2A state championship game.

The 2019 Daily Advance All-Area football team features players of the year and multiple all-conference performers.

Jayden Calloway, Currituck, QB/DB, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference co-Offensive Player of the Year, NCC second-team all-conference selection at quarterback and defensive back, credited with over 2,000 all-purpose yards.

A’marion Hunter, Perquimans, QB, So.: The Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection threw for 1,528 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions; rushed for 1,435 yards with 15 touchdowns.

Mitjonta Stanley, John A. Holmes, RB/DB/QB, Sr.: Area Player of the Year.

Traveon Powell, Currituck, RB/DB, Jr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection at running back, credited for over 1,200 rushing yards.

Juan Riddick, Northeastern, RB, Jr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection at running back, tallied over 1,300 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns.

Quashawn “Quasi” Thomas, Northeastern, FB/DL, Jr.: Thomas tallied over 500 rushing yards with 10 total touchdowns. Nine of his touchdowns were rushing scores. On defense, he tallied over 80 total tackles with over 10 sacks.

Jerron Hinton, Northeastern, WR/DB, Jr.: The junior was a Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a wide receiver and a defensive back. Hinton had over 600 receiving yards with eight receiving touchdowns with four rushing touchdowns. He added over 300 rushing yards. On defense, he tallied over 20 tackles.

Currituck: Collin Jennings, Currituck, OL/DL, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as an offensive lineman.

Nathan Colombo, John A. Holmes, OL, Jr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection.

Jalen Owens, Currituck, OL/DL, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as an offensive lineman, NCC second-team all-conference selection as a defensive lineman.

Wade Staten, Northeastern, OL, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as an offensive lineman.

Tate Yokely, John A. Holmes, OL, Sr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection.

Adrian Spellman, Northeastern, DL/TE, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a defensive lineman. Tallied over 120 total tackles with 20 sacks.

Kaveon Freshwater, Northeastern, DL, So.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a defensive lineman, MaxPreps.com second-team all-state team selection, over 100 tackles with over 20 sacks.

Kentrial “KJ” Harvey, Currituck, DL, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a defensive lineman, credited with 16 1/2 sacks with over 100 total tackles.

Jamel Tripp, John A. Holmes, DL/OL, Jr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection, 94 total tackles with four sacks.

Tyrese McCleese, John A. Holmes, DL, So.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection, 130 total tackles with 10 sacks.

Teddy Wilson, John A. Holmes, LB/RB, Jr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection, 83 total tackles with three fumble recoveries. On offense, he posted over 400 rushing yards.

Jabari Stanley, John A. Holmes, LB, Sr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and all-conference selection. He had 120 total tackles with a fumble recovery.

Trent Walker, Currituck, LB, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a linebacker.

Bobby Wilson, John A. Holmes, LB, Sr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection. He had 87 total tackles with six sacks, two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown in the state playoffs against Manteo.

Rayshawn Lister, Northeastern, LB, So.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a linebacker. He totaled over 80 tackles with two sacks.

Quaymon Williams, Northeastern, DB, Jr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a defensive back. He had over 31 total tackles.

Keenan Downing, John A. Holmes, KR/PR, Sr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection. He had 540 kick return yards with 374 punt return yards, scored three touchdowns on kickoff returns with two touchdowns on punt returns. Added 349 receiving yards with seven touchdown catches as a wide receiver.

Holden Hodge, Northeastern, ATH, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a wide receiver and NCC second-team all-conference selection as a defensive back. Named Northeastern’s Offensive Player of the Game in the NCHSAA 2A state championship game against Reidsville Dec. 14. in Winston-Salem. Tallied over 700 passing yards with eight passing touchdowns and added 819 rushing yards with six touchdowns at quarterback. Tallied over 300 yards with three receiving touchdowns. Credited with four interceptions as a defensive back.

Christian Spencer, Currituck, ATH, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference second-team all-conference selection as a specialist, a wide receiver and as a defensive back.

Caleb Brickhouse, Northeastern, K/P, Sr.: Northeastern Coastal Conference first-team all-conference selection as a specialist. Brickhouse made over 57 point-after-touchdown kicks and 90% of his field goal attempts.

He had multiple touchbacks on kickoffs and recorded a 77-yard punt in the NCHSAA 2A state championship game against Reidsville Dec. 14 in Winston-Salem.
